SEO basics for business owners

· 2 min read · By the SYNTVEX team

SEO means making it easy for search engines to understand your website, and for the right people to find it. You do not need to be technical to get the basics right.

The four things that matter most

  • Content that matches what people search for. If customers search for "dentist near me", you need a page that clearly covers what you offer and where you are.
  • A technically healthy site. It should be fast, work on phones, use HTTPS, and have a sitemap so search engines can find every page.
  • A Google Business Profile, if you serve customers in a specific area. Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere.
  • Trust from other sites. Links and mentions from real websites in your industry or city count more than any trick.

A quick on-page checklist

  • Each page has one clear topic
  • The page title is under about 60 characters and includes what the page is about
  • The meta description is around 150 characters and reads like a useful summary
  • There is one main heading, followed by logical subheadings
  • Images have short, descriptive alt text
  • Pages link to each other where it helps a visitor

What does not work

  • Repeating keywords over and over in the text
  • Buying links from random websites
  • Copying content from other sites
  • Anyone promising a guaranteed first-page ranking

SEO or ads?

Ads bring visitors the day you switch them on and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes longer, but the traffic keeps coming. Many businesses use ads for quick results while they build up their search visibility.

How long does it take?

Technical fixes can help within a few weeks. New pages and articles usually take three to six months to show clear results. Two free tools help you track progress: Google Search Console shows what people search for before finding you, and PageSpeed Insights shows how fast your pages are.
