Why website maintenance matters
· 2 min read · By the SYNTVEX team
Many businesses treat a website as something you build once and forget. Then one day the contact form has been broken for three months, or the site shows a security warning.
What goes wrong without maintenance
- Outdated software gets hacked, because known weaknesses are public
- The domain or the security certificate expires and visitors see a warning
- A form stops sending emails and no one notices for weeks
- Pages slowly become slower as images and plugins pile up
- There is no recent backup when something breaks
What maintenance includes
- Updating the software, plugins and libraries the site depends on
- Regular backups, and checking that they can be restored
- Watching uptime and security
- Testing forms, checkout and other important paths
- Small content changes: text, images, prices
How often
Updates and checks are usually done monthly. Backups should run daily or weekly, depending on how often the site changes. Uptime monitoring runs all the time.
Doing it yourself or getting help
If your site is simple and you are comfortable logging in and applying updates, you can do a lot yourself. If the site brings in enquiries or sales, a small monthly support plan is usually cheaper than one bad week of downtime.
A monthly checklist
- Submit each form and confirm the message arrives
- Check that the certificate and domain are not close to expiry
- Look at page speed on your phone
- Confirm a recent backup exists
- Remove admin accounts for people who no longer work with you
